Google AI Mode lets people continue a search as a conversation. Google's “query fan-out” can break a complex question into related searches, retrieve web material, and assemble an answer with source links. Google's introduction to AI Mode describes the method. For a website owner, a page may contribute one useful part of a much larger question. The search box is only the visible change.
URL impressions have their own report
Site owners now have a dedicated Search Console report for visibility in Google's generative AI features. It shows impressions for site URLs appearing in AI Mode, AI Overviews, and related features, with views by page, country, device, and date. Google's announcement describes the scope. That makes one question easier to answer: which pages appeared, and how did their exposure change?
The report does not preserve the answer
It does not answer whether the brand was recommended. A URL impression does not preserve the full question and answer a user saw, nor does it establish whether the answer named the company or described a product accurately. Teams need a separate, controlled sample of real buyer questions and cited sources for that. Such sampling has failures of its own. In a July 2026 analysis of its production data, Geolix.ai excluded Google AI Mode and AI Overviews from one case comparison because collection success was too low. The methodology in “The GEO Market Is Splitting Into Four Delivery Models” makes an important distinction: missing observations cannot be counted as zero visibility.
Check the site's inclusion setting
There is also an inclusion setting to inspect. Search Console's Search generative AI control lets a property include or exclude its links and content from features such as AI Mode; a child property may inherit a parent's choice. Google's help page defines the setting. This is separate from checking whether a particular page can be crawled and indexed. Even when a page meets the technical requirements, Google's guide to generative AI features in Search says it does not promise the page a place in an AI answer.
A useful AI Mode review therefore keeps two records. Search Console gives the site-level evidence of page exposure. Repeated answer samples show how the brand is described in selected buyer situations. Each has a different denominator and a different failure mode. Together they can point to a page or fact worth investigating. Neither should be relabeled as a complete “AI recommendation rate.”
